The Worst Food in the World

I used to think that fast food, refined carbohydrates (especially sugar) and artificial sweeteners were the worst “food” you could consume, but that was before GMOS came on the scene. By injecting genes from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans into our food supply, we have created what many are calling “Frankenfood.”

The crops have been genetically engineered to either produce their own pesticides or withstand massive doses of herbicides.  Chemical giants like Monsanto claimed that gene modification would increase farmers’ crop yields and profits, but the opposite has proven to be true. Corporations that now control much of our food supply are the only ones getting rich – while Americans re getting sicker.

How GMOs Create Disease

Around 80% of your immune system resides in your gut. When the body identifies a bacterium, toxin or other irritant, an immune response is triggered. This “attack” on the foreign invader creates inflammation.

Several studies have shown that this is what happens when we consume genetically modified food. The body doesn’t recognize the “fake food,” so assumes it is harmful. When you continually eat foods that trigger an inflammatory response, a lot of damage occurs in the body – especially in your stomach and abdomen.

Recent medical research shows that hidden inflammation, the kind that originates in your gut, is at the root of ALL chronic conditions, including heart disease, obesity, diabetes, dementia, depression, cancer, and even autism.

I don’t think it is a coincidence that digestive disorders related to gut inflammation have skyrocketed since 1996, when GMOs were first introduced. Autism has also increased dramatically (600%) since GM foods came on the market, and diabetes has nearly tripled.

The Secret Killer

TIME magazine has called inflammation “the secret killer” for the following reasons:

“It destabilizes cholesterol deposits in the coronary arteries, leading to heart attacks and potentially even strokes.”

“It chews up nerve cells in the brains of Alzheimer’s victims. It may even foster the proliferation of abnormal cells and facilitate their transformation into cancer.”

“In other words, chronic inflammation may be the engine that drives many of the most feared illnesses of middle and old age.”

 Who Can We Trust?

Most Americans are eating genetically modified foods for these reasons:

  • They are unaware of the risks to their health.
  • They don’t realize how many GMO products are in the “convenience” (packaged, canned and frozen) foods that dominate our grocery store shelves.
  • Government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have said these genetically modified crops are safe – even though there has never been a study on humans to prove this

The only studies have been on animals, showing a link between GM foods and the following:

  • Infertility
  • immune dysfunction
  • accelerated aging
  • dysfunction of cholesterol synthesis
  • insulin regulation
  • changes in the liver, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system

The reality is that the FDA is controlled by the corporations they should be protecting us from. When a corporation wants something, one of their executives suddenly begins working for the FDA. Once the needed change in policy occurs, that person leaves the FDA and returns to the company they previously worked for.

I find it interesting that Obama’s campaign promised an increase in organic food production and labeling of GMOs, then hires former Monsanto VP to head the FDA. The new administration is no better.

While Trump’s wife is removing all GM products from the White House, he received $1 million from Dow Chemical for his inauguration. Now Trump is telling the EPA to set aside reviews of harmful, toxic pesticides that have been linked to damage in children’s brains.

These chemicals are also responsible for the growing list of threatened or endangered species, including pollinator species vital to our food supply.

Are GMOs labelled?

Sixty-four countries, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, require genetically modified foods to be labelled. While a 2015 ABC News survey found that 93% of Americans believe genetically modified foods should be labelled, it is not required in the U.S. and Canada. Thankfully, there was a Non-GMO Project created to give consumers the informed choice they deserve.
