Preventing and Reversing Diabetes and Other Disease

It is a lot easier to experience good health when you eat healthy foods and get rid of the ones that keep you sick. I hear most of you whining that you don’t want to give up your favorite foods and beverages, and that’s fine. This info is for those committed to turning their health around. Try it for 30 days and I’ll bet you get hooked on how great you feel.  That’s what happened to me!

I don’t advise getting off everything at once, but the foods you want to eliminate over time include refined carbohydrates, gluten grains (or all grains if you’re serious about doing this quickly), cow’s milk,  and alcohol. That leaves beef, chicken, fish and vegetables, so you won’t starve. Here’s the details:

Refined carbohydrates – especially sugar – cause a rapid spike in blood glucose, so they should obviously be eliminated. This includes pasta, white rice, white (or wheat) bread, and any food containing sugar. Soda (including diet soda), fruit juice and other sugary beverages are the worst form because they go straight to the bloodstream. Doctors are beginning to advise parents to avoid giving children fruit juice for this reason. Even natural sweeteners like raw honey and maple syrup can affect blood sugar. Your best option is stevia, but look for a pure brand with no additives. My favorite brand is this one.

Gluten grains – wheatbarley and rye should also be avoided.  Gluten can trigger intestinal inflammation which affects hormones like cortisol and leptin, leading to spikes in blood sugar.  Also avoid oats and any other grain that comes from a facility that also processes wheat, barley and rye (the label should read “gluten-free”).

Gluten-free grains (unless cross-contaminated), are as follows:

  • Amaranth
  • Buckwheat (Read labels – Buckwheat pancake mixes may contain wheat)
  • Corn (often genetically modified, so look for organic)
  • Millet
  • Quinoa
  • Rice: white, sweet or sushi, brown or wild

Conventional cow’s milk (including cheese, yogurt and whey) should be eliminated at least for 90 days, especially in type 1 diabetes – unless it comes from a goat, sheep, or A2 cow. Cow’s milk (unless A2) is a problem because the A1 casein produced by conventional cows will harm the body and trigger an immune response similar to gluten. If you can tolerate dairy products, they should ideally be purchased raw and organic, from pasture-raised animals.

Milk containing rBGH, or recombinant bovine growth hormone, is a genetically engineeredvariation on a naturally occurring hormone. It is injected into dairy cows to increase milk production, and has been linked to the formation of tumors. rBGH is banned for milk destined for human consumption in the European Union, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Many milk brands that are rBGH-free label their milk as such, but as much as 40% of our dairy products, including ice cream and cheese, contains the hormone.

Genetically Modified Foods. These have been linked to kidney and liver disease, food allergies and intestinal problems, and may promote diabetes.

Realizing how detrimental they are to health, around 3 dozen countries have banned their use. In the U.S., however, corporations that manufacture genetically modified foods have “bought” many of our politicians and are now infiltrating the natural foods industry. The only way to take away their power is to refuse to buy GM foods or seeds.

Following is a list of GMO and GE foods. When purchasing packaged foods, look for organic or non-GMO project certification.

  • Papayas (most)
  • Corn on the cob: The only stores that refuse to carry GMO corn on the cob is Whole Foods,
  • Trader Joes, and Aldis.
  • Yellow crooked neck squash and zucchini: Not all has been bioengineered, but it is not labeled. Buy organic to avoid GMO squash.
  • Soy, cottonseed and canola cooking oils – use avocado or coconut oil for cooking and (first) cold-pressed, extra virgin olive oil on salads
  • Alfalfa
  • Potatoes
  • Eggplant
  • Arctic Apples
  • Sugar Beets
  • AquAdvantage Salmon
  • “Innate” Potato

Alcohol, including beer and sweet liquors, should be avoided because it can dangerously increase blood sugar and lead to liver toxicity.

In addition to the foods listed above, eliminate the following: 

  • Yeast (nutritional, baker’s and brewers) – yeast is a cross-reactor, so should be avoided on gluten-free diets
  • Instant coffee (contains gluten)
  • Milk chocolate (contains milk and sugar)
  • Fried foods (“bad” oils made even worse through high temperature heating)
  • Deli “lunch” meats and hot dogs (additives that have been linked to cancer and disease)
  • Specialty coffee drinks (sugar and artificial additives)
  • Fast foods – MSG (neurotoxin) and other unhealthy ingredients
  • Sherbet and other artificially flavored ices and popsicles
  • Pancake syrup
  • Sweetened cereals (including those from non-gluten grains)
